Psarros Shipyard was founded in 1923 and is one of the oldest active shipyards in Greece. For over a century, the Psarros family has continued the craft of shipbuilding with dedication, expertise, and respect for the tradition of Greek seamanship.
The family’s roots trace back to the island of Symi, deeply tied to the sea and the art of wooden shipbuilding. The story begins when grandfather Manolis Psarros left the island and came to Piraeus, and continues in Perama in 1926 with his son, George.
George Psarros was considered one of the most prominent traditional shipwrights of his time. He built fishing boats, trawlers, majestic sailing vessels, as well as luxurious leisure yachts. Among the notable boats bearing his signature are the famous “Saita”, which began its journey in Greece and ended up with the Rothschild family; the unique “Aetos”, built for the Lycardopoulos shipping family; and the “Pandora” of the Lemos family.
In 1983, the shipyard’s legacy was passed on to Manolis Psarros, the third generation of shipbuilders. With academic studies in naval architecture and hands-on experience alongside his father, he continued the shipyard’s course, maintaining tradition while moving toward modernization — serving yachts and superyachts up to 560 tons.
In the 1980s, in collaboration with archaeologist Michael Katzev and Haris Tzalas, he carried out the 3D reconstruction of the ancient merchant ship “Kyrenia II”, faithfully applying the techniques and materials of the 4th century BC. The vessel was tested in experimental voyages across the Eastern Mediterranean, showcasing Greek maritime heritage internationally. Today, it is housed in the Kyrenia Museum in Cyprus.
In 2014, he was honored at the Spetses Classic Yacht Race with a Lifetime Achievement Award, recognizing his immense contribution to the development, promotion, and preservation of traditional Greek wooden shipbuilding.
For Manolis Psarros, the shipyard is a sacred space, and every vessel a unique creation — not just a piece of wood, but a story — a bond between humanity and the sea.
Today, the tradition continues with his daughter, Angeliki Psarrou, who represents the fourth generation, actively involved in the business, bringing a fresh perspective and enhancing the shipyard’s alignment with modern-day demands.
With continuous technological innovation, dedication, consistency, and a commitment to high quality, Psarros Shipyardremains a steady point of reference for yacht owners and marine professionals.
